The gender perspective in the studies of space, technology and environment in a challeging globilized society has been included during the last decades at every European Academic or Research Institute as a new research field. The European Union and its Member States encourage and support activities in these directions. In 1998 the European Commission Directorate-General on Research set up an expert group with the task of preparing a report on women in science for shaping a relevant policy in the Union. Growing concern has been expressed on the lack of women not only among career scientists but also among those who shape scientific policy. The report is available at the following address: http://cordis.europa.eu/improving/women/documents.htm The 5th European Framework created networks for the guidance of junior researchers at the first steps of their career. And in 2003, data on women’s involvement in the industrial research were selected and processed and a co-operation network was established for addressing the issues. In Greece, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology developed a network for strengthening the position of women scientists in education, research and employment (Network PERIKTIONI). In 2003, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki started offering an Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Program in Issues of Gender and Equality, which was funded by the 6th European Framework and hosted by the School of Architecture. The Engineering Faculty covers a variety of cognitive and research fields, like architectural and urban design, structural and environmental engineering, high technology and management of natural resources. Thus, the Faculty constitutes the most appropriate frame for the establishment of a Center for issues such as: equality and diversity in the city, inclusion by design, gender, environment and energy, new eco-friendly technologies, social and cultural integrity of the European Greek society. In the year 2008 the Center of Space, Technology and Gender is established with a formal decision of the Board of the Engineering School. Center of Space, Technology and Gender focus its research and activities in the following fields: - Architectural and urban design, inclusion by design: equality and diversity in the city
- Gender, Environment and Energy
- New eco-friendly technologies
- Counseling services for new engineers to fight for equal (integration in their future) careers
The Center covers all the Schools of the Engineering Faculty and it is open to the contribution of members of the faculty that are interested in their scope. ACTIVITIES In order to accomplish its aims, the Center will organize a variety of activities, such as: - Courses, Seminars, teaching material
- Publications
- Workshops
- Studies, Research
- Supportive actions for under-gradate and post-graduate students, for studies and career, mentoring
- Networking with relevant European platforms and groups
